Types of Therapeutic Approaches We Use in Therapy for Veterans and Firts Responders

Our therapists use evidence-based approaches that are particularly effective for veterans and first responders who have experienced operational stress, trauma, and the ongoing pressures of frontline service. These therapies are practical, structured, and designed to help process difficult experiences. We work collaboratively with each client, using approaches that respect the realities of their profession while supporting long-term mental health, resilience, and stronger relationships.

Trauma Focused Therapies for Operational Stress Injury (OSI) or PTSD

Helps individuals safely process difficult or distressing experiences that may still feel “stuck” in the nervous system. This approach can reduce symptoms such as hypervigilance, intrusive memories, mood challenges, emotional numbness, and chronic stress.

EMDR Therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)

A well-researched treatment often used with first responders and veterans who have experienced trauma. EMDR helps the brain reprocess distressing memories so they become less emotionally overwhelming and easier to live with.

Cognitive Processing Therapy

This structured approach helps people examine and reframe thoughts related to guilt, blame, or self-judgment so they can regain a more balanced perspective and reduce the emotional weight of the trauma.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)

Focuses on practical tools to manage anxiety, stress, and negative thought patterns. Many first responders appreciate CBT because it provides clear strategies that can be applied in everyday situations.

Stress Regulation and Resilience Skills

Learn practical ways to calm the nervous system, improve sleep, manage anger or irritability, and build healthier coping strategies.

Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT)

Helps individuals understand and process deeper emotional experiences that may have been pushed aside in order to stay functional in high-pressure roles. This approach can also be helpful in strengthening relationships and improving communication with partners and family members.

Moral Injury Therapy

Many experiences can deeply conflict with one's personal values, sense of right and wrong, or professional duty. This approach helps veterans and first responders process feelings such as guilt, shame, anger, or betrayal while working toward self-understanding, healing, and restoring a sense of integrity and meaning.

Family Therapy and or Couples Counselling

Improving communication, strengthening family relationships, and creating supportive ways for family members to cope with stress while maintaining connection and stability at home.

Grief and Loss Therapy

Provides a supportive space to process these losses, honour the emotional impact of these experiences, and develop healthy ways to carry grief while continuing to live a meaningful life.

Peer Resource Connection

As adjunct support, we help link clients to peer support networks or community resources where they can share experiences and gain support from others with similar backgrounds. These connections can reduce feelings of isolation and reinforce the sense that they are not alone in navigating the challenges of frontline service.

Seeking support early can help prevent symptoms from becoming more overwhelming. Your wellbeing matters as much as the people you help.

Ways we support
Couples and Families

When someone lives with PTSD or an operational stress injury, the effects often extend onto the entire family system. Partners, spouses, and children may experience emotional distance, communication struggles, increased caregiving responsibilities, or the stress of trying to understand changes in mood and behaviour. Many veterans and first responders also carry deep guilt about how their stress, trauma responses, or emotional withdrawal may be affecting the people they love.

At Lakeland Therapy Centre, we recognize that support for partners, spouses, family members is often overlooked and greatly needed. Our therapists provide compassionate, practical support for couples and families so that everyone can better understand what is happening and learn healthier ways to navigate these challenges together, including in some instances deeply distressing challenges of death and loss.

We provide clear, compassionate education that helps partners and family members understand trauma symptoms, emotional reactions, and behavioural changes so they can respond with greater understanding rather than confusion or frustration. Also improve communication, and rebuild trust and emotional closeness that may have been affected by operational stress or PTSD.

Spouses and partners often carry their own emotional burden when supporting someone in a frontline profession, including increased responsibilities in the household, in some cases intimate partner violence, loss and grief. Therapy offers them a space to talk openly about their experiences, strengthen their own resilience, and feel supported in ways that are often missing in traditional care systems.

When trauma or operational stress affects a parent, children may also feel the impact. We help families create supportive routines, strengthen parent-child relationships, and improve emotional safety within the home.

Through therapy, couples can learn healthier ways to support each other, navigate stress together, and strengthen the partnership that is often a vital source of stability and resilience. It provides a supportive space for both partners to connect again, improve communication, and rebuild emotional closeness that may have been strained by the demands of military or frontline work.

We help couples and families develop strategies for managing shift work, transitions after difficult calls, emotional withdrawal, and the ongoing unpredictability

Together, these approaches help veterans and first responders and their families shift from disconnection to connection, from reacting to relating, and from surviving to feeling hopeful and thriving again.
