What Is Teen Therapy
Teen therapy is a structured, collaborative process that helps teens understand their emotions, build healthy coping skills, and navigate the pressures of growing up. Whether your teen is struggling with anxiety, mood changes, school pressure, or big life transitions, therapy offers a safe space where they can sort through what’s going on with someone who truly gets it.
Our compassionate, approachable and experienced teen therapists use approaches like Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and family-focused strategies for effective communication and support at home.
And because teens don’t grow in isolation, we include parents and caregivers in the process in meaningful, supportive ways, so you know how to help your teen feel grounded, guided, and understood.
- Understanding and managing big emotions
- Improving communication: so your teen does not shut down
- Building coping and problem solving skills: for school pressure, friendships, and daily challenges.
- Strengthening self esteem and identity: especially for teens who feel lost, insecure, or “not good enough.”
- Navigating social issues: such as bullying, peer conflict, online stress, or feeling left out.

Evidence-Based Approaches
Used in Teen Therapy
Teen therapy at Lakeland Therapy Centre is collaborative, personalized, and grounded in evidence, never one-size-fits-all. Our experienced and warm therapists work with your teen with utmost care and goals towards providing the most up to date, evidence based effective and tailored treatments so your teen can thrive and grow.
Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)
With use of evidence based CBT therapy we help teens notice unhelpful thought patterns and build more helpful, balanced thinking.
Dialectical Behavioural Therapy
This evidence based approach teaches useful skills for emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and mindfulness in a way teens can use.
Mindfulness-Based Strategies
Mindfulness develops presence, awareness, and regulation in the moment, helping teens find more groundednes, calm and learn to respond with self compassion and care instead of reactivity.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
Supporting teens to accept hard feelings while discovering their values and goals.
Family sessions (optional)
Involving parents where possible to improve communication, build trust, and build more connection and communication at home.
Together, these approaches guide teens from “I can’t handle this” to “I’ve got this,” from emotional overload to steadier coping, and toward healthier communication at home.

Common Questions About Teen Therapy
How can I make therapy seem less intimidating for my teen?
Iti is completely normal for teens to feel unsure or nervous before starting therapy. You can help by keeping things simple and pressure-free: let them know this is their space, they don’t have to “perform,” and the first session is really just a conversation to see if they feel comfortable. Many parents tell their teen, “Just try one session, no strings attached.” We also take things slow, meet teens where they’re at, and work hard to build trust from day one.
What signs show that my teen may benefit from therapy?
Many parents reach out long before things become “serious”—and that’s a good thing. Common signs include increased anxiety, low mood, withdrawal from friends, irritability, school stress, trouble sleeping, identity concerns, or emotional overwhelm. But you don’t need a crisis or a diagnosis to begin. If your teen is struggling, unsure of themselves, or feeling stuck, therapy can give them a safe space to explore what’s going on.
Will I know what happens in therapy with my teen?
Confidentiality is a crucial part of building trust. Teens need to know they can speak freely. We explain confidentiality clearly at the start: most of what your teen shares stays private between them and their therapist. Involving the family is important in teen therapy and our therapists frequently encourage teens in involving parents. Parents are also updated on general themes or safety concerns, but not the detailed content of sessions. If a teen is at risk of harm or needs additional support, we will always involve you—but we do so with sensitivity and collaboration.
How long before my teen feels better?
Every teen’s journey and needs are different. Some notice changes within a few weeks, while others benefit from longer-term support. We move at the pace that feels right for your teen, not rushed, never forced. Our goal is to help them build skills, feel more grounded, and eventually feel confident enough to continue those skills on their own. You’ll be looped in along the way so you always know how things are going.
How can I support my teen during therapy?
It’s natural to want to help, and your support is very important. You can encourage your teen by listening, showing interest, and being consistent with routines, while allowing them the space to explore their feelings in therapy. Our therapists will guide you on how to balance involvement so your teen feels supported but still independent.
