Common Questions About Therapy for Men
How do I know my situation would need therapy?
It’s natural to feel unsure about this. Many men start therapy feeling skeptical, or tentative and that’s okay. You don’t have to be convinced for it to be worth trying. You are always in control about the process and length of therapy. Also our therapists engage in reflection on whether therapy is feeling useful to you and working towards the goals you wish to achieve.
I've always handled things alone. Why would I need to use therapy?
Many men are used to carrying things alone. Therapy isn’t about taking away your independence. It’s about giving you support, tools, and perspective so you can add more strategies to your repertoire. So you can have a space to reflect, experience deeper understanding and awareness, build further insights and make changes that help move you towards the life you wish to see.
Is therapy confidential?
Yes. Your privacy is taken very seriously. What you share stays confidential, with a few unique exceptions that your therapist will explain clearly.
Is therapy only about talking or will I get practical tools?
Our therapists offer real-life strategies you can actually use, along with space to understand patterns and challenges more clearly. In order to be able to tailor the therapy uniquely to your needs, the therapist will have to get to know your situation first and encourage sharing of information in a non judgmental supportive space.
What kind of issues do men come to therapy for?
Men experience a multitude of life pressures and challenges. Common reasons include stress, anger, relationship struggles, anxiety, burnout, pressure from high performing roles, low mood, work pressure. Also feeling emotionally shut down or overwhelmed or dealing with traumatic past experiences that continue to affect the present.
Does this mean I'm losing control or going crazy if I'm in therapy?
Not at all. Needing support doesn’t mean something is wrong with you. It usually means something in your life has been heavy, stressful, or overwhelming for a while. Many men are taught to push through silently, so by the time they consider therapy, they may already be carrying a lot on their own. Reaching out is actually a sign of awareness and strength, not weakness or loss of control. Therapy is simply a space to understand what’s going on, steady yourself, and learn practical ways to feel more grounded, clear-headed, and in control again.
Will my therapist judge me?
Absolutely not. Therapy is a respectful, non-judgmental space where you can be honest about what you’re going through without criticism or pressure.
How long does therapy usually take?
This depends on your goals and what you’d like support with. Some men come for short-term support; others choose longer-term work. You and your therapist decide together in a collaborative way and the way that suits the challenges you are experiencing and goals you are working towards.
Do I have to be in crisis to start therapy?
Not at all. Many men start therapy simply because they feel stressed, stuck, or want things to improve. You don’t have to wait until things feel unmanageable to benefit.
Can therapy help with anger, irritability or difficult feelings?
Yes, therapy can help you understand what’s underneath anger, manage reactions, and learn healthier ways to respond when emotions run high.
