What Is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured, evidence-based therapy originally developed to support trauma recovery. During EMDR, you focus on painful memories while gently engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements, tapping, or sounds to help your brain reprocess and release emotional intensity.
This process allows your mind to heal naturally, so memories remain, but no longer trigger distressing emotions
- Quiet the emotional charge of painful triggers and memories
- Rebuild a sense of control and safety
- Reconnect with the person you are beyond what happened
- Move forward with real strength, compassion, and resilience

Common Questions About EMDR Therapy
What is EMDR therapy again and how do I know it's for me
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a gentle but powerful therapy that helps your brain reprocess painful or overwhelming memories so they lose much of their emotional charge. Rather than reliving trauma over and over, EMDR helps you find a way to hold those memories without being overwhelmed, allowing healing, calm, and new perspectives to emerge. Our specialized EMD therapists guide you through the process of assessment and help review whether this therapy modality would help.
Will I have to relive the trauma in detail?
EMDR doesn’t require detailed, repeated storytelling of painful events. Instead, under safe and controlled conditions, you focus on the memory just enough while using guided bilateral stimulation (like gentle eye movements or tapping), allowing your brain to reprocess the memory naturally. You remain in control and in the present the entire time and are receiving support from your trained therapist.
Can EMDR help with other issues, not just "classic" trauma symptoms?
Yes, EMDR can be helpful for any painful experience that continues to affect your emotional well‑being and contribute towards current symptoms of anxiety, panic, relationship trauma, low self esteem. It helps reduce the emotional “charge” tied to those memories or triggers and can bring relief, clarity, and emotional regulation back into your daily life.
Will I feel completely overwhelmed?
Our therapists create a safe, compassionate space, provide grounding and self-care tools, and adjust pacing to your comfort level. EMDR does sometimes brings up strong emotions however you’ll never be asked to push beyond what feels manageable. We walk with you step‑by‑step, offering support and care throughout your healing journey.
How many sessions will I need before I feel better?
Some people begin to feel relief after a few sessions: less emotional reactivity, fewer intrusive memories, more peace. Healing is however personal and depends on how complex or deeply rooted the trauma or negative experiences are. For others, healing takes longer, especially for complex or long-term trauma. Our therapists will work with you to set realistic expectations and support you gently at your pace.
Is virtual EMDR effective?
Absolutely. Many clients find online EMDR sessions just as effective as in‑person ones and this is backed by research and evidence of now numerous EMDR virtual therapy programs. Our therapists are trained to ensure safety, grounding, and stabilization, even through virtual sessions, so you can do this work wherever you feel secure.
